MEC VISITS POOR PERFORMING SCHOOLS IN CHRIS HANI DISTRICT
by Siphumelele Mdyodyo
MEC Nancy Sihlwayi and MEC Mandla Makapula handing over school uniform | 2016 Grade 12 learners gathered under one roof with political leadership, parents (SGB), educators, and presiding officers from sector departments during a seminar organised by the Department of Social Development in Queenstown - Indoor Sport Centre recently.
The rationale behind this remarkable event of its kind emanates from schools adopted by Social development that recorded low matric result in year 2014 and 2015.
The adoption of Hector Peterson High from BCM, Mhlotshana High - Whittlesea, Phakamani High – Ngcobo, Siyaphakama High – Sterkstroom, and Zamokuhle High - Whittlesea, necessitated the department to draw up an intervention strategy to remedy the high failure rate of learners.

MEC Nancy Sihlwayi addressed the audience on the pertinent issues affecting pupils. She said she was delegated to assess and report about what went wrong to the class of 2015 matriculants. She warned learners not to rush into things that are still to come ahead, not to fall pregnant before marriage and not to undermine poor parents because they are illiterate.
Parents with poor parenting skills caused by poor disciplinary mechanisms and techniques were envisaged as the basis and cultivation of demoralised children as there is a high rate of; drug and substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, ill-discipline, hence the department is attaching one Social Worker per school to deal with these issues. |
