The Gift of the Givers and the Department of Social Development have given aid directly to families of Alice in Raymond Mhlaba Municipality who suffered severe material loss when floods damaged that area, leaving some families homeless.

Gift of the Givers is a disaster relief Non-Profit organisation that was established to offer disaster relief and response together with other humanitarian work. The aid provided came in a form of blankets, clothing, linen, diapers, food parcels, school clothing, stationary packs for kids, mattresses, hygiene items and other relevant items.

Ali Sablat from Gift of the Givers said disaster relief is their speciality. He said they (Gift of Givers) received a call from Social Development Amatole District Director Mr Vusumzi Langa seeking assistance and possible interventions. “We were contacted and we had to do our own assessment. After the assessment we despatched our team to this area. We are very pleased to be part of this temporary intervention and we would also like to thank Social Development for the meaningful role that they have played in ensuring that these families get the much-needed assistance,” he said.

Nongako Mathatha (67), form KwaGaga Township in Alice, whose house was damaged during the floods said she almost lost everything. “ I almost lost everything, the floods were heavy and some of my house contents were damaged.  Social Development and Givers (sic) gave us hope. We are very grateful for what we have been given. Also the municipality promised us to intervene.”
